CHICAGO — The CONCACAF Gold Cup has long been a trophy essentially shared by the U.S. national team and Mexico, which might make you think the current U.S. coach would be opposed to losing out on the good odds his team would have of securing an international trophy every two years.

Not Jurgen Klinsmann, who said he loves the idea of replacing the current Gold Cup with a combined Copa America similar to the tournament taking place right now.

"I would be totally up for that one. I think that would be huge for our region to play every four years in the Copa America in the format that it is played right now," Klinsmann said on Monday. "It would be, for us, and I'm sure speaking on behalf of Mexico and Costa Rica as well, it would be huge for the CONCACAF teams. It would be huge to have that type of a competition every four years. For us to grow and compete with these top nations in South America, it would be absolutely fantastic."

An ESPN Deportes report on Monday stated that CONCACAF and CONMEBOL are putting the finishing touches on agreeing to combine the CONCACAF Gold Cup and Copa America on a permanent basis, with the tournament being held in the U.S. every four years. The report suggests the new tournament would mean the elimination of the Gold Cup and Copa America in their current forms.

The U.S. and Mexico have combined to win ever Gold Cup since 2000, when Canada lifted the trophy. Replacing the Gold Cup with a combined Copa America would mean the opportunity to compete in a more difficult tournament every four years, which would offer a better preparation for the World Cup, but it would also mean playing one less international tournament every four years given the fact the Gold Cup is held every two years.

Klinsmann led the U.S. to a Gold Cup title in 2012, but then watched the U.S. finish in fourth place in the 2014 edition of the tournament, the team's lowest finish since 2000.
